Kalinga: A trek to remember (K.I.D.S. Foundation)

I’m posting this straight out of a friend’s e-mail. I believe in this cause and I also think that Kalinga is one of the most breathtaking places in the country. I hope you could consider this trip. The price looks really affordable and you’ll get to help out people in one of the most remote corners of the Cordilleras and Caraballo Mountain Range. These people were devastated by the Typhoon Megi last year and it would get a great gesture to give them a pick-me-up on May.

Hi everyone!

It’s the second leg of K.I.D.S. Foundation’s, A TREK TO REMEMBER (Medical-Dental Mission) with our partner in Kalinga, the IDP Foundation. We would like to invite medical practitioners; doctors, dentists, nurses, nature lovers, travel geeks, or simply, those young at heart to explore another memorable trek going to Tanudan, Kalinga while getting a chance to know 3,500 pangol tribe & locals of 14 remote barangays of Tanudan.

A Trek To Remember – is a bi-annual trek of the K.I.D.S. Foundation that, distributes books and school supplies for public schools in far flung places. This trek-for-a-cause brings the trekker back to nature and assures the participant of a different kind of high that one can only feel when one shares. This month of May we would like to continue this journey and we will be trekking to two (2) barangays; Baccong and Bawak of Tanudan, Kalinga that will serve the fourteen (14) barangays: Ammaboy, Magtoma, Lay-asan, Burninan, Liyang, Cabugao, Gombowoy, Sabila, Allubaggan, Darulog, Pagugo & Mabaca to bring not only school supplies and books but, a Medical and Dental services and conduct a gift-giving in preparation for the opening of the school year. Tanudan is a 4th class municipality of Kalinga province.

What: A TREK TO REMEMBER VII: Medical-Dental Mission & School Supplies Gift-giving for Pangol tribe & locals of Kalinga

Where: Tanudan, Kalinga (right next to the picturesque town of Tinglayan)

When: May 20th – 24th (ETD for Kalinga at 6PM of Friday – ETA in Manila 5AM of Tuesday)

Registration starts today.
Registration fee is Php3,000.00 (meals, transfers & accommodation). Deadline for Registration is on April 30th and Payment is on May 10th. Kindly, send your registration form via email: rt_oquendo@yahoo.com.

In case you want to experience the adventures in Kalinga here are the extra fees that you have to consider for the R&R or explore in Tabuk, Kalinga after the medical mission (whole day of Monday):

- White Water rafting Php2,500.00
- Kalinga purse & bag Php 30.00 – 500.00
- Kalinga wall decor – Php1,000.00/pair
- Kalinga blend Coffee – Php120.00 to Php150.00/box

In addition, we need to bring medicines & medical supplies and we are also willing to accept cash donations to be used to purchase primarily the vitamins for 3,500 children for the medical mission.

Incident Report: Encounter At Mainit, Bontoc

Inquirer reported today that there was a lethal armed clash between communist rebels and government forces near baranggay Mainit. The baranggay is under the jurisdiction of the provincial capital of Mountain Province Bontoc despite being over an hour away by jeepney. There are only two trips daily in and out of the place.

To give you an idea, Baranggay Mainit is still almost three hours away from Sagada by car. As a precaution though, officials have decided to make the Bomod-ok Falls in Baranggay Aguid off limits to visitors for now.

Sagada is peaceful as ever and the authorities are definitely trying to get on top of the situation against the NPA.

I was fortunate enough to go back to Sagada for an eighth time during the last week of August. I was in a group of five that included one of the Philippines’ top photography and travel bloggers Lawstude.

He is a well traveled lawyer who definitely has a passion for adventure. In fact, he was fresh from a hike to Imugan Falls two days before we left for Sagada – and yes, with fresh cuts and bruises to show for it!

As much as I have kept myself from posting negative things on this blog, I just couldn’t let this particular incident go. I have been to Alfred’s Cabin multiple times already, but the service and the food was certainly not up to par the last time I ate there.

We were served a single chicken leg that was cut up into three sections – and that was what the 120 peso entree of Buttered Chicken was supposed to be. This was a far cry from the old buttered chicken dish that used to order at this very same restaurant a couple of years back. The pancit canton dish was also as bad – the noodles were ridiculously salty and had very little additions.

I was so embarrassed since I invited friends to join us. I would never eat there again unless major changes happen. If you happen to have bad experiences at Alfred’s Cabin, feel free to share it here.

We know that most of you probably got here after Googling “Sagada” and you’re most likely browsing through to find out more about Sagada, but a little bit of site-related news every once in a while wouldn’t hurt, right? Thanks to the votes of a good number of loyal readers and supporters who saw the promise behind this undertaking, Visit Sagada was named as one of the Emerging Influential Blogs for 2008. The site has propelled itself as the most-relevant search result for the backpacker haven despite being just founded during February of this year. We are deeply honored for the recognition and the team appreciates the trust and appreciation of everyone who chose to name us as one of their candidates on their ballots.

Visit Sagada was likewise nominated as one of the nominees for Best Travel Blog for the 2nd Annual Philippine Blog Awards. The awards ceremony will be on September 21, 2008 at Esplanade.

Janette Toral recently launched the second edition of the annual Ten Emerging and Influential Blogs to give citations to the the ten best new blogs in the world. The project is 100% democratic and anyone in the world who owns a blog could vote for his or her top 10 before July 26, 2008. The blogs that are eligible to be cited are blogs that were started on July 1, 2007 or newer.

As you would have guessed Visit Sagada is in the thick of things and is getting considerable support. But dear readers, we also need your support. A vote from any blog will do – whether it’s a dot com, multiply, wordpress, blogspot, tabulas or livejournal. If you think Visit Sagada has had a positive contribution to the online world since its launch, then please do vote for the site along with nine other sites whom you think are also deserving.

Visit Sagada Stickers

The Visit Sagada Team has been doing the rounds for this summer’s blog events. We’re aware that even if we’re getting decent hits from backpackers and travelers, we’re still fairly unknown among bloggers. To increase our visibility off-line, we’ve produced limited edition Visit Sagada stickers similar to the site badge (designed by Angel Juarez) that we use on our personal sites. We’ve given away close to a hundred stickers and we intend to bring a bunch of them to give away to the establishments in Sagada for their guests and visitors.

Aside from experiencing the beauty of Sagada, one of the best things that could come out of your backpacking sojourn is meeting great people who also love to appreciate the wonders of nature and the cultures of other people. If you’re going to Sagada, simply leave a comment here and tell us the duration of your stay. Hooking up with other groups and travelers could save you money for the tours and could also win you a friend for future trips.
